Supporting Learning at Home

For many families time is at a premium these days. Our children need opportunities to have quality time with their families, to relax and to enjoy recreational activities. However, we do need to remember the importance of key skills in order for them to succeed. With this in mind, we would ask the children to complete the following activities weekly:

  • Regular reading – to help children develop fluency and understanding reading to an adult at home at least five times a week for a minimum of 5 minutes a time. The more confident readers would be expected to read independently for 20 minutes at least three times a week.

  • Spellings – Daily practice of spellings helps to ensure retention in the long term memory, which at the end of the day is why we practice spellings!

  • Times Tables – You could practice times tables in the car, at breakfast, in the bath etc. By the end of Year 4 children are expected to know the times tables up to 12 x 12 by heart.

  • Phonics – Those children on Lexia should be using it at least three times a week at home. Children in the infants need to practice their sounds on the key ring five times a week.

  • Handwriting – As children practice their spellings they can also practice their cursive handwriting. Previously we sent home a laminated handwriting sheet which your child can use and details to the on-line handwriting website.

Supporting Maths at Home
We use the White Rose scheme for the basis of our Maths teaching.
Please support your child at home to learn number bonds to 10 and 20 (e.g. 6+4=10, 16=4=20) and the multiplication tables to 12x12.  When children have rapid recall of number bonds and multiplication tables it helps them with their maths lessons in class.
Supporting English at Home
As a school we have purchased access to an on-line resource.  Children can access this on a tablet to practice their cursive handwriting or you can print worksheets for them.  If you have lost the log-in details please ask in school.
Phonics Play - This website has a range of interactive resources which will help to reinforce the phonics your child is learning at school.
Oxford Owl - Browse over 200 free eBooks to read online (on a computer or a tablet).
